It is true that my opportunity to learn perl, to the degree to which I have in just a year and a half, has been significantly broadened by my employer. That's not to say that learning perl wasn't at the top of my todo list before I was employeed, but they did give me the opportunity and salary to buy all of the ORielly zoo, as well as the time to get lost in them. To top it all off they sent me to the Perl Converence 4.0/Open Source convention.
Speaking of the convention . . .
Not having ever attended any type of convention I must admint that I set unreasonable expectations on myself and the convention. I felt disapointed for several weeks afterwords. It is only now I am realizing that this was a definate highlight in my career, just in different ways than I had expected.
